Awhile back I saw these shoes on Pinterest.
Super cute, right? Well, as soon as I saw them I told myself "I could totally make Disney shoes!"
A pair of white canvas shoes, Mod Podge, black and white Mickey comics (I scanned some from a book and printed others), and a foam brush (not pictured). I kept some of the comics to be background images and chose my favorites to be front and center. I just cut them to fit the shape of the shoe. Add plenty of Mod Podge to each piece and put them on the shoes. After everything dries, cover the whole shoe with a few layers of Mod Podge, allowing each layer to dry before adding another. I fell in LOVE after they were done.
The problem is... when I first wore them, the comics/Mod Podge cracked in front where your foot bends. I'm not sure how to fix this next time, so if you have any suggestions, please let me know! I first decided to make these for my Halloween costume, so I won't be wearing them again until September when we go to Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party. I really want to make another pair that will work for every day, though (I am also planning a pair of TARDIS shoes... Doctor Who, for those who don't know... though those will be painted so I won't have the same problems). What do you think? Any ideas on what to do differently next time?
Love these! If you find the answer to the cracking issue please share.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes I know what the TARDIS is! So I am not the only geeky on.
These are so cute! That sucks that they cracked, I hope that you find a solution to the problem. I have no idea what TARDIS is... the only time I've ever heard of it before now is on your Pinterest boards. (You are totally obsessed by the way ;P)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE disney too! So does my daughter who went first time at age 6. She is now 22. Was it difficult to cut them to fit the shoes? I don't really even know how to start?
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't difficult at all, just took a little time. I trimmed down the piece I wanted to use, put it up to the shoe, and made light pencil marks where I needed to cut it. There might be an easier way, but I was just figuring it out along the way. :)
DeleteHow should I have published this to show my profile pic? I chose anonymous because I don't have a google account?
ReplyDeleteHonestly I'm not sure how to have a profile pic up if you don't have a google account. I've never looked into it. If anyone else reading this knows how, please let us know!
DeleteWow, they look amazing! I think you probably will just have to do it on hard shoes so they don't crack...I feel like the ones you linked from pintrest weren't shoes that would bend when you walk. Great Job!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you! That makes a lot of sense. I'll have to go get a pair more like the Pinterest ones and try it again. When I get a chance to do that, I will post again and let you know how it turned out!
DeleteUse printable vinyl. You can print the comics out on the vinyl and then iron it onto the shoe.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea. I'll have to try that! I just need to wait for a good sale on shoes somewhere and grab another pair. Thanks for the tip!
DeletePrint on fabric then use fabric modge podge.....
